Don’t Think, Just DO – Why I’m Not Giving Myself Time To Overthink….

The Secret To Success?

This month has possibly been one of the best months of my entire life. September has been non-stop from the get-go.  If you follow my Instagram and other social channels you may have seen that I have been traveling up and down the country attending huge events such as London Fashion Week, the new Manchester United Kit launch, the Viper App first birthday celebrations, the Anthony Joshua Fight at Wembley, shooting a national advert for a huge high street brand, celebrating my A Magazine 30 Under 30 Award…. the list goes on and on. All of this jam-packed into 30 intense days.

You would think I should be satisfied and content with my recent opportunities and progress, the problem is, I’m truly never satisfied. First things first i’m incredibly grateful for everything that is coming my way, all the hard work and hours that have been put in are leading me to some great things, alongside great people that I’m meeting along the way and surrounding myself with.

The truth is I’m always wanting more, more progress. Figures show that 70% percent of high achieving millennials identify feeling this way. As if we have something to prove to ourselves, to our peers, and to our family.

We should only prove to ourselves.

It’s no wonder only 1 in 3 Millennials say they’re very happy. With most of us stuck on the perpetual treadmill of pursuit, we never get the fulfillment we really want out of life. Well not for me anymore, I’m enjoying every moment while I can.

So how can we actually find fulfillment? I believe the simple answer is to not overthink, this is why I’m attempting to change the way my mind works, a key factor in me making big strides.

This sentence is repeated so many times throughout my day, it might as well be my mantra. I say it to myself when I’m replaying potential scenarios in my mind and I say it to anyone who tells me they’re thinking of starting a business, creating a YouTube channel, writing a cookbook, entering a sports competition…..

“Don’t give it a second thought, do it.”

Reducing thinking to a minimum is not only the key to greater happiness, but it’s also the key to higher performance, success, and plain old getting shit done.

Don’t Let Your Mind Play Tricks On You

Let me guide you through one of my earliest memories. I was 4 years old, and out for an evening walk with my grandad. We took a lot of walks, but this evening’s walk was different. Today I decided to walk without bending my knees. When my grandad asked why I was walking that way I couldn’t provide an answer, but I remember wondering how I was supposed to know the right way to walk when there are so many options.

Fast forward a decade, and now I’m being asked what I want to be when I grow up by my teacher, which presents an endless number of questions for 14-year-old to wrap his head around. This question still hasn’t been answered, by the way. Partly because I’ve concluded that growing up is a trap, and what I want to “be” is ever-evolving, more on that another time….

My point is, I have a history of thinking to excess. I used to believe it was the only way to solve problems and make the right moves in life. Now I realise that’s how it disguises itself.

Overthinking is the enemy of productivity, happiness, and execution.
Not only because it uses time and energy that could be spent on whatever it is you’re thinking about, but because it destroys your confidence and peace of mind. Two things that are crucial to you living your life in the most fearless and inspired way.

Over-thinking is the cause of anxiety for many and the reason for so much hesitation. Time spent thinking creates a platform for doubts to thrive, and the opinions of others to rule your life. Don’t let your mind overthink.

Your Only Limits Are YOU

But how often do we think about our thinking? When do we stop to question why we over-think, whether it’s productive, and how to overcome it?

While conscious thought is a powerful tool that has its applications, when you’ve become overly attached to it because it provides you with the illusion of control. When you consciously run a scenario through your mind over and over, contemplating over every possible outcome, you feel like you have your thumb on the situation. This false sense of security is not only a waste of time, it lulls you into self-sabotage.

By thinking things over, you inject your limiting beliefs, fears, and the opinions of others which you worship so faithfully. And this is detrimental to you becoming everything you know you can be and dream of being.

Unnecessary thinking will only dampen your potential. It’s time to start trusting your subconscious mind.

This aspect of your mind is not only responsible for everyday ‘miracles’ as I like to call them, it also constantly guides you with signals we call ‘gut feelings’. I’m cutting down on dwelling on the past, what the future will hold, and focusing on the now.

I’m filling up my time with working, keeping fit, reading, creating content, traveling, keeping my mind as active as possible at all times.

While the conscious mind works hardest during states of angst, the subconscious mind talks to you during states of relaxation. It requires you to let go and listen, then executes without a second thought.

Simply the more you think, the more you fuel doubt, insecurity, and fear. Instead of thinking, just breathe, listen, and do. I hope reading this helps at least one person.

Keep Your Thoughts Simple, Like Your Wardrobe….

Often the same process is applicable to your wardrobe and clothing choices. Sometimes you may want to put on a complex, unique, outfit that really catches the eye and stands out, but you can make the same impact with pieces that are simple, minimal and effective, without overthinking too much.

I have been a fan of Ardent for a number of months now. This is a brand that really speaks to me, they are passionate about creating high-quality core essentials by stepping aside from the norm and introducing subtle branding with an unrivaled attention to detail.

What makes this brand even more special is each item released is designed by creators directors Ross & Matt alongside their in-house Creative Team and crafted from the finest materials sourced from around the world.

You can tell Ardent pride themselves on presentation as each of their items are packaged in their signature matte white boxes, with footwear also being accompanied with bespoke dust bags for additional protection, luxury.

Ardent’s mission is to build an ever-growing collection of timeless classics which will remain a staple piece within the modern wardrobe for many years to come and the pieces seen here will undoubtedly do that.

The classic Overshirt and t-shirt look is so easy to wear and designed as a combination fit by Ardent, it works so well. Here I teamed the Asper Denim Overshirt with a crisp white Ignis t-shirt underneath.

Where Ardent truly shine is the craft of their beautiful Chelsea Boots, the Rebus boots are quite possibly the best I have ever slipped my foot into and give many high-end fashion houses a run for their money in the footwear department. Crafted from Italian velour suede over a stacked leather sole, the boots feature a calf leather inner, cushioned footbeds and subtle branding to the underside. Impressive.
